Wondering where to post this ? for input.
When I looked at the moderators on this site I chose it.
Just had a inquiry from a relative, 19 year old male going to college this next year and was going to buy a apple pro mac cost $2000.00. He is going to study computer science in school. He was wanting to know where to buy XP to put on it as a dual operating system. My response. 1 I. wouldn't buy a mac in the first place. 2. 1000.00 -1200.00 should buy a good laptop for a college freshman. 3. I personally would send my kids with a $600.00 laptop for the school scene. But that was 20 years ago that I had any experience.
OK Am I off base, old fashioned ? Input desired

Mod's move to section where I may get most input

eddds40--Your relative should ask the college what they recommend or even require.

Thats what I told him first off, said he would do that as he wasn't really impressed with my answer of no apple.
He as a student is apple influenced as the High School here furnish 1 for every student.

Whilst taking an apple for the teacher might get him extra brownie points  I personally think he would be better spending the extra money on tuition literature and such.Getting him to stick with a standard laptop is my recommendation :D

He walk in with a apple the first day and when they tell him that the school does not support apple in any way, shape or form, he will find out he wasted $2000.

Tell him to get on the phone and find out what he needs to know and quit guessing.

Walk into my classroom not prepared guaranteed a failing grade.

And yes, I taught industrial hydraulics at the college level for a number of years.

I agree with these other guys. A Mac in computer science is useless. He'll be learning programming and where on a Mac can he do that.....not going to happen. Tell him to spend his money on a nice PC rig.
