I have a router, my laptop IP 192.168.1.1, my desktop is 192.168.0.1, yesterday my husband was on the IE using this Mozilla Foxfire, the computer froze up and after that he was unable to connect to the IE on the desktop. Today I have the desktop connected to the router through my modeum (satellite) and my laptop works fine, gut the IP on the desktop has changed. All three tech support areas Best Buy Geeks, Router, and HP say that the IP has changed due to a software download. I have gone into the cmd center and have had the Hughes Net people (satellite IE Co), and the Router people ping me, it is not finding my computer because the IP has changed. They all say it is due to the software download, that one must go into the networking in the control panel and change the IP back to the original, and that is what is happening. I hope you are able to help me, I do not mind paying for knowledge, but they are not willing to share that with me incase it happens again and I am not willing to pay for it twice incase it should happen again.
I have gone to the cmd and it comes up with a whole different IP, I have gone to networking in cpanel and put in the right info and also have tried auto find IP, I have gone to the tools-connections-and put that on auto and proxy and still I am getting a different IP.
I have reformatted my computer and tried to wipe the hard drive, but still nothing.
If you are able plz help.

The router is probably set to change the IP numbers every 24 hours by default. Listed as Client Lease Time
Also in IE, go to Tools internet options, Connection Tab
Lan Settings Button.
Proxy server may be checked when it should not.
Make sure it matches the working one there.
Once they match, reboot the non connecting one. and test it.

The problem is the private address 169.254.248.67
Run ipconfig /release
then ipconfig / renew
Let us see if that straightens it out.

Also you can run the repair in Start, control panel, networkconnections, Local area connection, Support tab.
You will see the repair button.

Please note as well - there is a space after ipconfig, before the / switch:
ipconfig /release
That's one important space!

192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1 may not even be in the same subnet, considering that most SOHO routers have 255.255.255.0 as netmask. That means the PCs may not be able to communicate to one another because of the way IPs are assigned.
Then, one of these IPs ought to be the default for the router anyway. It's a bad idea to assign .1 IPs to anything, it can often lead to a conflict.
Finally, if the PC gets the 169.254.x.x IP, that's a Windows self-assigned IP address when no DHCP server could be found on the network. Either your manual network settings got screwed and your network doesn't have a DHCP server enabled to assign IPs to computers, or your hardware has failed. Check if your switch/network card has a lit "link" light, replace cables, try another port in the switch. And THEN try the ipconfig /release and /renew, when hardware is confirmed to be working properly, and you're positive that you enabled the DHCP server in the router.

Please, help us to help you - if you're quoting someone else, please use the Quote feature.
Either that, or the signature in post #9 has nothing to do with the advice you're giving somebody else.:)

Do you have any firewall software installed apart from that in Xp?
If so try temporarily disabling it and within the network connection properties use the repair button and see if the connection resets so that you can connect to the internet.

I have uninstalled Norton antivirus and all works well, when I tried to install my antivirus, NOD, or another antivirus, (not at the same time) PCtools, then I am unable to use the IE. When I uninstalled those two as well then all is fine, except that I am not protected.
I reformatted my computer once again, (plug sequence) my desktop into the router and then the router into the modem.
I am pulling my hair out and after 7 days there is not much left.

You could try AVG antivirus software:
