I guess you have noticed that updates are no longer offered by clicking "Check for Updates now" using AdAware SE.
AdAware has announced that defintion updates will no longer be offered for SE and that AdAware 2007 should be installed.

However, for some strange reason updates for SE are in fact still offered, but you have to download and install manually. See right hand margin here

I have no idea how long this will last.
AdAware 2007 is slower than SE and is not too well received by users of SE. However, Lavasoft obviously wants every one to convert.

I read some of the forum posts last night on lavasoft and assumed it was dead except apossible manual, and that is why i posted, users here seem to have a better grasp, so if i am using defender under vista, and spybot, and ca av, plus the vista firewall, is it adviseable to do the 2007 lavasoft or just do what i have or something else? I have yet to hook up my linksys wrt54g.

If i clear the browser, cookies etc before i run either, nothing usually comes up on a scan.

I haven't had anything on s&d for along time.

If you have been reading the Lavasoft forums you know many people are that pleased with the performance of AdAware 2007. It runs slow, and its ability to catch spyware is less than most other antispyware programs.
But as long as you keep AdAware SE Personal up-to-date manually or download and install AdAware 2007 Free (after uninstalling AdAware SE), you have nothing to lose. They are both inactive and will not conflict with other antimalware programs. And they add just a bit more protection.
Vista's Firewall, as installed by default, is not much better than WinXP's. Neither monitor outgoing traffic. ZoneAlarm and Comodo come in free versions and do monitor outgoing traffic.
There is a way to configure Vista's Firewall to monitor outgoing traffic

Using the Vista zip program, has always worked before.

I see in the adaware forums last night that the def file had to be deleted first, but then if i remember when i tried it first that file type was not recognized, so i haven't gone any furher yet-time.

If you are repeatedly receiving a "Your definition file maybe out of date" message, though you still get "No new updates available" when trying to do a webupdate, then there are a couple of things you can try.

1. Delete any definition files in the "c:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE" folder. (This file is usually "defs.ref") (the folder name will changed depending on if you have pro / plus / free). There may also be a defs.ref.old, you can safely delete this too. Then try a webupdate.

2. Check your "hosts" file. It could be that a malware has changed it so that connections to our update server are not working.
Your hosts file is located in "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\". Open the file "hosts" with notepad. If you see any references to "download.lavasoft.de" or anything else regarding Lavasoft, you should remove them. Now try your webupdate again

3. If the first 2 methods do not work, then you should try a manual update.
Update the definition file by downloading the zipped definition from http://dlserver.download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip
Unzip this file and you will get a "defs.ref" file. This file should be copied to "c:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE\" (the folder name will changed depending on if you have pro / plus / free)
Now load Ad-Aware. If the definition file is still showing your old one, then click on the settings icon (the cog wheel), then click "General". At the bottom right, there is a box saying "Using Definition File". Click the "Open file" icon next to that box and then browser to the definition file in "c:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE\" (the folder name will changed depending on if you have pro / plus / free) Select it and press open. You should now have the latest version
4. If all of this fails, please contact technical support, or post a question on the support forums. It could be that you have a sneaky malware on your system that is disturbing your internet connection to certain servers and need to have it removed first. Please make sure you try ALL of the methods above before posting a question.
Hi Jim H, I'm new here too. This is how I installed the latest defs file:
On another forum it said 'Unzip the file which you have downloaded (defs.zip) to extract defs.ref and copy defs.ref to the directory where you have Ad-Aware SE installed, overwriting the existing defs.ref.'
Go to C:\Program Files and open the Lavasoft folder and copy the new file there, you will be asked if you want to replace the existing file, so click 'Yes' and that's it. When you open Ad-Aware SE it should now show 'Definitions file SE1R212 07.01.2008 Loaded'.
If you, or anyone else, use WinZip, you can right click on the downloaded zip file and drag it into the Lavasoft folder, the left click on 'Extract to here'. It'll then be the same as I said before. I've just done this myself, so I know it works! I hope this is useful to you.

I like "new" guy on the block: Threatfire (it used to be called Cyberhawk).
Free version works in real-time, and updates are automatic.

Of course, the paid antispyware apps like, Spy Sweeper, Spyware Doctor, and CounterSpy are all better. But that said, I have tried SS and SD and found them to be almost too intrusive, slowing things down etc. CounterSpy may be better but I don't know as I've never ran it.

My own choice has been to use SUPERAntiSpyware. http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html It does a very good job of cleaning up infected PCs. And better yet, if you don't need/want auto updating, auto scheduled scanning or a real-time component, you can use the free version of SAS. For many users, this is more than enough. (I bought the paid version because I liked the program and wanted to support it.)

Also, SAS has quite good support, including a user forum that the company sponsors.

If you choose to run SAS, be aware that it will set itself to run at boot (to allow easier access to the manual scanner.) If you don't want this option, you can go under the Preferences and disable the boot option.

I know of 2 of them have not used them, will check them out. Have you used i think spyblaster? Maybe the name is not right, one person i know of uses it if the name is right.

Are you on a router also?

I made copies of all the outbound areas to block on vista, i have about 7 different photos, do i dare post them here to view, i know this forum can be googled, but some items i wonder about blocking?

Spyware Blaster is fine for blocking some undesirable websites for cookies (which aren't technically adware or spyware) and known bad sites for unwanted ActiveX downloads (which are specifically aimed at Internet Explorer.) But it can't take the place of a true antispyware program. (I use Spyware Blaster even though I really don't run IE.)

Not really sure what you are referring to about Vista's outbound areas. You shouldn't post anything that reveals any personal information. If you can post the essentials but obscure the personal stuff, you should be ok. I've attached an example...

You are running vista or xp, not that it makes adifference in my question maybe, but in vista firewall settings it shows things like this
windows media player network sharing windows media player domain no allow

there are zillions of lines to allow or not, how do you decide on outs and ins that are there?

core networking for example
distributed transaction for example

i need a firewall tutoring i think

i made screen shots of all these and took them off the pc onto a dvd.
