I just came across a new media player called VLC media player for windows. From what I read, it is suppose to be better than windows media player. Has anyone ever used this? Is it worth downloading and using as my primary media player?

I have used it for quite a while.

Pros - small footprint and quite versatile. Will play a lot of files WMP cannot.
Cons - certain videos quality not great.

You do not have to use it as primary. If you ever want to use it for viewing, just right click a video file and use the 'open with' command and choose VLC.

I also use it as a standalone- drag/drop player for broken or truncated clips that other players (WMP specifically) can't play.

I wouldn't use it as my primary player though... one reason is that it can't be used to embed itself in web pages to view online streaming content and once it's made to associate with all media type clips then when you click on a streaming link the best you'd be able to do is download it to view later.. worst case is not being able to see it at all.
