I use a paid for virus program on my home computer,, but my neighbor who is on limited income, had no virus protection on her PC so I install the
AVG \Grisoft 7 free version, ( which I have heard is very good free program)., and because it is free there is no support for them,, so I wanted to pass along this email I received from her. Maybe I missed something on her XP pro windows with Microsoft firewall and updates installed and turned on., I thought had selected the program properly to update at a certain time each day but received this email from her.:

There seems to be a problem with my anti-virus protection. I turned on the computer just before 4 p.m. yesterday since my anti-virus protection is supposed to kick in automatically between 4 and 6 p.m. It did not kick in so I manually activated it at 4:30 p.m. Tonight I turned on the computer again shortly before 4 p.m. but it never did kick in so I manually activated it after 6 p.m.
Why does it not kick it at 4 pm. and how can I fix it?

If the icon in their system tray stays colored(yellow black, red and green),
then there is no update.
When the icon turns to black and white , then it needs an
update.
That being said, they can double click the sys tray icon, and click the
scheduler tab, highlight the "Update plan in basic mode",and
then click the "edit schedule" button at the bottom.
Then check to see if the
"Periodically Check For Internet Updates" box is checked ,
and the "If internet connection is not available...." is checked also.
AND just check to see that the schedule is set for PM, not AM ?
I use AVG free on my Win98 partition, and it will only go to
black and white about once per week.. and unimportant but
I do my updates 'manually'. Only when the icon goes to black and white.

I would say that IF there is no update available, she may have
"missed" the update process. :D

PS I liked AVG free so much that I paid for the network edition
for my XP partition.

Hi Cleaverb

Reading through the various posts I read your comment on AVG.

I have used the free version for yonks and did not realise the meaning of the black and white icon vs thee coloured version. Have now set my version for auto update...one learns all the time on virtualdr !

Thanks for the information, apologies for intruding

No problem, j r ;) .. and just to clarify, I have had at least two updates
for AVG free edition this week . And also have had a few updates for
AVG network edition. And I found the firewall they 'hide' in the download.
I didn't know it was there, until I did a custom install .
