hi
I went to control panel
then fonts
there are lots of fonts in there all in their
little files
I was wondering is there any way to view the fonts
collectively and get an overall view of lots of diff
fonts and see their styles etc

in say photoshop you click on the fonts and get a drop down list
I can hardly read them
It always seems a struggle to get a decent font
or even to figure out what they are

You can view the fonts loaded on your system in windows/fonts on your C drive

THANK thats great, I can now see all the fonts
together

I downloaded a few off the internet
they are in documents now, do I have to
put them somewhere to get them into the system ?

windows/fonts on your C drive. That's where all fonts must be for them to be referenced.

And to properly install a font or fonts ... open Fonts in the Control Panel. Then File and Install New Font...... i.e., do not just place them in the Fonts folder.

If you have word installed you can scroll through system fonts via the taskbar

One neat font manager I used to use is Bitstream Font Navigator. It comes with Corel Draw. One useful function it has is to find all fonts on the pc. I have not seen the software outside of Draw.

The one I now use and recommend is AMP Font Viewer (http://www.ampsoft.net/). It has a couple of really good functions.

It can show fonts anywhere on the pc (many font utilities just show installed fonts). I organize my fonts in a folder C:\Fonts which has subfolders of font types. I do it unscientifically: plain, decorative, script, fancy & fantasy, space & technology, very bold, wingdings. These are not installed fonts so do not contribute to slowing the pc down. My installed fonts are in the normal system fonts folder.

AMP can temporarily install fonts. You select the font and it is installed. When AMP closes down, the font is uninstalled. Very handy. AMP can also permanently install a font/s.
