I am sure that this is very simple, I just don't know how to do it.
I am sending out promotional emails to my customers and would like to have an opt out link at the bottom. I want the link to be to my email address, but should also contain the word "Unsubscribe" in the subject field.
How do I do that?

<a href="mailto:youremailhere">Unsubscribe</a>

Thanks Jawsh. I already tried that, and for some reason, it doesn't work.

Usil, I use this:

<A HREF="mailto:email@domain.com?subject="Unsubscibe">Unsubscribe</A>

Usil, I use this:

<A HREF="mailto:email@domain.com?subject="Unsubscibe">Unsubscribe</A>

Hongman, nearly correct. One quotation mark too much.

<A HREF="mailto:email@domain.com?subject=Unsubscibe">Unsubscribe</A>

As an example usil, try the following: Start a new email message, (assuming Outlook/Outlook Express here)

Put your real email address in the To... field. (You're going to send this Test message to yourself)

In the Subject: box, type in Test

Down in the body of the message, type the word Unsubscribe

Highlight the word Unsubscribe

Click Insert | Hyperlink...

In the URL box, delete the "http://" part and type inmailto:usil@israel.com?subject=Unsubscribeand press [Enter] (or click OK)

That's it. Click File | Send

Now back in Outlook/Outlook Express, click Send/Receive

Click the Unsubscribe link in the email you just sent to yourself. With any luck a New Message window should open up with usil@israel.com in the To... field, Unsubscribe in the Subject: line and your cursor sitting down in the body of the message ready for you to type in a message.

Thanks all for your answers.
Doc, that worked fine in Outlook, but it didn't come out so great in Gmail.
Unsubscribe <mailto:usil@israel.com?subject=Unsubscribe>

Any idea why?

Try this: In Gmail, click Compose Mail, type the word Unsubscribe, highlight it and click the Link button:

http://www.spywaredrguide.com/VirtualDr/images/gmail001.gif

In the Enter a URL: box that pops up, type in:mailto:usil@israel.com?subject=Unsubscribe

http://www.spywaredrguide.com/VirtualDr/images/gmail002.gif

Press [Enter] (or click OK) and you should see an underlined Unsubscribe (indicating that it's a link)

Send this email to yourself so you can try it

Sorry, what I meant to say was, that when I write it in Outlook, and send it to Gmail, it comes out like my quote above. I don't need to send it out from Gmail, only from Outlook.

Whoops, misread your response.

When you're in Outlook composing your link, (Insert | Hyperlink...), try changing the Type: pulldown from http:// to mailto:. (Then send it to Gmail and see if it looks and works ok).

I made the change and it still comes out the same in Gmail. Could it specifically be a Gmail issue?

Here I am creating the Unsubscribe link in Outlook 2003:

http://www.spywaredrguide.com/VirtualDr/images/gmail004.gif

Here I am receiving the email in Gmail. (Note the URL in the Status bar at the bottom of the browser window as I point to the Unsubscribe link):

http://www.spywaredrguide.com/VirtualDr/images/gmail005.gif

And here's what happens when I click that Unsubscribe link in Gmail:

http://www.spywaredrguide.com/VirtualDr/images/gmail006.gif

As you can see, it's working for me. :)

Doc, I sent you a test email to your Gmail account. Let me know how it came out. Its still not right for me in Gmail.

Looks like it's working ok here:

BTW, I just clicked your Unsubscribe link, added:Looks like it's working ... for me anyway. 8-)

http://discussions.virtualdr.com/showthread.php?t=206722 in the body and sent the reply. If the email address you supplied is legit, you should be receiving a response soon.

Firstly, strange that its working for you and not me through Gmail. Could it be a Firefox issue? I'll try to check through IE.
Secondly, the email address is legit, but I didn't get you reply for some reason.

Hmmm... Just clicked the Unsubscribe in your email once again and sent it with a "Is it working now?" in the body of the message.

** edit **

Just tried to "ping pc-pro.co.il" and go to "http://www.pc-pro.co.il" and both failed.

usil

OK, I got the last email and sent you a reply.
You are not getting a ping cause there is no website. I would be happy (and pay someone) to make me one :)
I tried sending to my Gmail account and opening it in IE, but it still did not work properly. Do you or anyone else have a logical explanation for this?

Just noticed that the first emails came as well, but was in the junk mail folder for some reason.

Good to hear you ended up getting both emails.

As far as it not working there, different versions maybe? Running the following here:Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
Microsoft Office (Professional Edition) Outlook 2003 (11.8010.6568) SP2
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.060301-1519Oh, and the "need a website" ... need to get started on one here too. :)

I am running the same versions. I guess I'll have to live with it. As long as customers get it ok, I don't mind.

SpywareDr

If we're running the same versions of everything, something's not set the same somewhere.

We're both looking at the same message. In Gmail you're seeing:Unsubscribe <mailto:someone@somewhere.com?subject=Unsubscribe>and I'm seeing:Unsubscribe (mailto:someone@somewhere.com?subject=Unsubscribe)The difference must be caused by either a Gmail or IE setting somewhere. Something to do with the way HTML is displayed?

Gmail does offer two different 'views', 'Standard' and 'Basic HTML' (http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=15049&query=html&topic=0&type=f) and for a moment I thought I might be on to something. However, when I view your message in either of these two views, your Unsubscribe link looks the same (hidden 'mailto:...'). :(

(You can set these different views at the bottom of a Gmail page ... the line looks like this "Gmail view: standard with chat | standard without chat | basic HTML Learn more)".

usil
June 7th, 2006, 07:34 AM
I have it set to Standard with Chat.

SpywareDr
June 7th, 2006, 08:21 AM
Same here, but it shows up the same:Unsubscribe (http://mailto:someone@somewhere.com/?subject=Unsubscribe)with either view for me.

Went browsing through and trying a few various IE "Tools | Internet Options... | Advanced" settings and for the life of me I cannot get Gmail to display:Unsubscribe <mailto:someone@somewhere.com?subject=Unsubscribe>(even with a [Shift]-Refresh between every change).

Don't know what to try next ... other than start comparing every single setting in our IE and Gmail. :(

usil
June 7th, 2006, 12:44 PM
Hmmm, I don't think its worth it. I'll just have to hope that everyone sees it properly. And if they don't, I guess they will understand what to do.
In any case, I appreciate the effort :)

SpywareDr
June 7th, 2006, 02:13 PM
No problem at all. :)

Sorry we don't have the difference in Gmail figured out though. If I run across something I'll definitely let you know.
