I was under the impression that MS had decided to do away with it, but apparently not. Maybe I'd better start saving for a couple of widescreen monitors :cool:

It just seems pointless, and a bit too big, the Start menu is fine as it is.

Woot! For anyone with a large monitor (20"+, even better widescreen), the size isn't much of an issue, and having somewhere to put status monitors etc is good.

And yeah, you should be able to turn it off.

Tuttle and liam858--Yes, after reading a little about IE7 from the link SuperSparks supplied, the Sidebar can be toggle on/off.

Thanks for the info Jim, i guess i'll wait and see if (a) It makes it into the final build, and (b) If i still have the same size monitor when it arrives. :)

I tried a third-party sidebar program that looks (almost) exactly like that one....frankly, I wasn't impressed at all. It takes up a lot of real estate with info that can be accessed in other ways. Who needs a huge analog (or digital) clock on their screen? You've got a clock down there in the lower right corner. Constant weather data? Can be had with just a click of a mouse. Shortcuts? Put them on the desktop...just the ones you access all the time (not one for every obscure program you have on the system). Scrolling stock market ticker? There are other less obtrusive programs for that. A 2" Recycle Bin icon? Funky Expando-matic icons that jiggle when you click on them? Please. Thanks, but no thanks, Microsoft. :rolleyes:

Edit: You can even make them semi-transparent. Like THAT does a lot of good...now you can view part of the desktop wallpaper as if it is in a fog bank and have to squint in order to read the sidebar. If Microsoft wants to impress me, then get all the security bugs out of the OS before releasing it....THAT will impress me.
