Does anyone know why I keep receiving runtime errors when typing a letter in Microsoft Word 2002? I started a letter over three times because of this error, which closes down my word document each time. I realy need to get a letter out that is very important but have to keep trying to remember what was in it to retype it again? I am running Windows XP home edition, if that helps.

Make sure you have Office XP Service Pack 3 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=85AF7BFD-6F69-4289-8BD1-EB966BCDFB5E&displaylang=en) installed. It might also be worth doing a Detect and Repair (through the Help menu somehow, or Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs).

Saving often is a good idea too. :) Just hit Ctrl-S to quickly re-save the current file.

Do you reboot after each error?

Runtime errors typically mean that there is a problem with Word. If you have installed SP 3 and if rebooting after each occurrence does not fix the problem, then you might consider uninstalling Word and re-installing it.

Also, have you installed SP 1 and SP 2?

The easy way to check this is to go to Windows Update and it will tell you if you have successfully installed each of the service packs. If you have not upgraded your Windows Update in the last 6-9 months, then you may need to do that also.

The new Windows Update provides all of this additional information, which makes keeping up with things so much easier. When Office 2003 SP 2 came out, I tried to install it but was not successful. So I waited a couple of days, until the rush was over with and tried again and it installed perfectly without a hitch.

Like Tuttle said, it sounds like a service pack issue. It would also help if you would tell us what you were trying to do when you got the runtime error.

Cheers,

Linda

I was typing a letter that I need to get out to an insurance company when the runtime error appeared. I started over a few times more and kept getting the same error again. I can't understand it because I use Word all the time and never had this happen before. Here is the error message:
Program: C/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office10/WINWORD.EXE
abnormal program termination.

I went to add and remove programs and repaired Word but I'm still getting the same error. What causes this to happen and what else can I do to fix it? Still confused.

I am at the end of my patience with WORD. I have been repairing, re-installing and re-trying to open it with no success. I did however, come up with another error message. It is: "Microsoft Word has not been installed for the current user. Please use setup to install the application." I am the only user on this computer and I have re-installed it over and over again from the original disk. Befor my computer crashed in December, this program ran fine. Now, when I try to install it after reformatting, I am getting into all these error messages. I need help ASAP!

When I had my problem with Word, I eventually found this website and I posted my problem. I got an answer within a couple of days and Microsoft fixed the code in less than a week.

I suspect that your problem is the result of your computer crash and possibly this has affected your user access. I have also discovered, much to my frustration, that way too many of Microsoft's error messages either point in the wrong direction or are less than helpful.

Reportedly, Microsoft support engineers check this website periodically. Here is the URL:

microsoft.public.officeupdate@googlegroups.com

Keep us posted and good luck.

Hi, you may need to register the winword.exe. Open a command prompt and type (you may need to change directory if so type)

CD C/Program Files/Microsoft Office/Office10/WINWORD.EXE /regserver

Press enter, if successful word should open. Then go to start run and type :-
regsvr32 ole32.dll press enter reboot and see how you go.

Just wanted to update my WORD problem. A week ago, I removed Word 2002 from my computer. I installed WORD 97 from an older office disk that I still have laying around. The 97 version was working fine. Then I upgraded to 2002 from my installation disk and used it for a few days and the problem appears to be gone. My thought about doing this was maybe 98 would help in installing whatever is messed up in the 2002 version. I'm not sure if this is what fixed my problem, but thought I would pass this along and end the problem solving on this issue. Thanx to evryone who responded, and I'm sure I will be back in the future. :D
