I have a dell latitude CPI-R400GT laptop. max ram allowed is 256mb.
i have concluded that the 2nd slot is bad.
is it possible to stick a single 256mb stick in the first slot? or is this not possible?
thanks
Bill
by the way, running win xp professional sp2.

Generally speaking, all pc's have a max amount of ram that they can handle. Also "Generally" speaking, it usually doesn't matter what combination you use to get to the max.
BUT, a pc with a max of 256 is a very old pc. I would look through the manual and or on Dells site to verify..

maybe i was wrong about the max. here's what the dell users guide on the computer itself says:
Memory
Architecture SDRAM
Memory module sockets two
Memory module capacities and type 32-, 64-, 128-, 192-, and 256-MB 3.3-V SDRAM1 modules
Standard RAM one 32-MB memory module (CPt C-Series)
one 64-MB memory module (CPi R-Series)
Maximum RAM 512 MB
Memory clock speed 66 MHz
Memory access time CL2 or CL3 (Note: CL3 indicates a CAS latency of 3 clocks)
BIOS address F000:0000-F000:FFFF
so maybe i'll go to best buy today and try a stick. i just hope i can return it if it doesn't work :D

Maximum RAM 512 MB
You should be able to use up to a 512 stick in the first slot.

you should be able to put one 256 meg stick in that slot not 512 meg as your book says it will take 256 in each slot.

According to Crucial, you can only have 2 x 128MB SDAMs.

well, after looking at the best buy website, they have a lot of ram on sale, unfortunately most of it is DDR ram.
looks like the only thing they have that will possibly fit is:
Model: 6432ZESWM4
a stick of 256mb pc100 sodimm,and its $129.99. Figures!! :p
i may just keep looking online and see if i can find a better price.

Ebay wouldn't be a bad idea IF you can find a seller with good Feedback, offers "Tested" RAM, and comes with a respectable Warranty......like that will be easy to find.:p
