I have been using this software for many years and usually a reinstall will fix any problem, but yesterday when trying to open the program from the desktop shortcut I got the following error, the one with the big red cross.
mswin.exe - application error
This application filed to initialie properly (0xc000007b). Click on OK to terminate.
When reinstalling the program this error appears again when trying to start the program again from the desktop.
I do not know if this is a WIndows error or something else.
I have XP Pro SP2
Futitsu Lifebook C2220 Notebook
ADSL Broadband
Hope someone can give me assistance
Thanks
Tilly

According to Google, the "microsoft.com" site contains about 13,500,000 pages. And, the string "mswin.exe" is NOT mentioned in any one of those.
When you search the entire web for "mswin.exe" you get all kinds of Trojan/Malware-type hits, (Trojan.Dumba, Backdoor.NetCrack.B, etc.), from sites like Symantec, McAfee and Sophos:

Thank you SpywareDr - however I do know that mswin.exe is a legal application, it coming from the Metastock for Windows program application file. Metastock (Equis) were unable to help me with the problem and because we had a couple of other un-solveable problems on the computer have done a full format and installed every again.
thanks for your imput

..
My Personal View is that Version 7 may not be compatable with XP SP2.. seeing as it seems that the current versiopn of Equis Metastock is Version 9.. best contact tech support at equis..
EDIT: just noted your comment on your contact with their tech support.. my suspicion is that it is past their tech support period.. the help your getting is a bonus.. no one will have tested the older version with the SP2..
Did a similar search.. i found a few links regarding metastock and yes it is the valid prog file,
The only version of mswin on your machine should be.. C:\Equis\Mswin\mswin.exe if a search of all folders with Hidden and system files viewable shows more than that then certainly look in to that.. otherwise.. I hold to my theory of the SP2 compatability..

Hi Mr Undertaker - thanks for your reply.. You are correct regarding the compatability but I do have the program running quite well on my other computer and have not had problems with 7 and XP. I know many other people who use 7 with XP and do not have this problem. Metastock 9 is quite costly and has a lot of features I do not need, as well as one many users do not like and will not upgrade because of it, so will use the older version until we have to change.
Thanks again

Ok what we need to do is look at what else is different on this PC...
background software?
Antivirus?
Firewall?
differences in running services..
Hardware drivers..(nvidia and ATI video drivers have given me grief)
also.. could be as simple as a memory compatability issue..
seeing as it is a clean install I wont go to the issue of spyware/adware..
how much memory in the notebook? compared to the other working machine.. single stick or two sticks of memory.. (have had some apps that don't like less than 512MB on Pro-SP2.. yet on other hardware.. no problems at all)
I couldnt have given a more broad answer could I.. sry..
I would start by disabling some of your background apps.. antivirus and firewalls..(mind dont connect to the net while doing this.... )
then checking other services and background apps..
as for the drivers.. some like nvidia load other APPs that can safely be disabled.. we will look into that lated.. start with the anti-virus and firewall..

Hello again. Thanks for a comprehensive reply. Both computers basically have the same software installed although some of the drivers may be different as one is a Fujitsu and the other an Asus.
They are networked and as have ADSL.
I have just installed all the programs needed so don't want to mess with anything at the moment, let's just see how it runs.
I see you are in the scrub, I am on the coast, although I understood inland was called the bush.
Thanks
