First of all I would like to just point out that I HAVE read buymystock's version of this post. He had the same exact problem with pretty much the same router. The reason I'm starting a new post is because he not only had problems with the disconnecting, but also had problems following instructions to fix it. I thought the post was getting a little messy so I thought I'd start a new one.

I have firmware v1.05 installed on this router, by the way.

At random times, usually every 1 or 2 days, the router will randomly disconnect from the internet, making it impossible to access the web via any computers connected to it. The way I fix this is by quickly unplugging and plugging the power back into the router. Then again this happens another 1 or 2 days later. Also every time the router is unplugged and plugged back in to fix this problem, it obtains a new WAN IP. This gets *very* annoying, since I have many virtual servers on the LAN running which require the IP to stay the same. I also have a DNS which depends on this IP remaining static for as long as possible.

Would there be any way to fix this? Perhaps any router setting, etc? I really want to go get a D-Link router, for many reasons. 1, it probably WORKS. 2, it hopefully has no limit on the number of port forwarding entries you can have. Whereas with the Linksys router, you are limited to only 10 entries on the firmware.

Anyway, I hope someone can help me fix this issue because I don't have the money to go buy a new router (Unless I could somehow get a free one :D) Thank you!

May i suggest redownloading and installing the update. I had some problems like you have until I updated this BEFSR41 V3.

Kind of acts like the update was corrupt to me.

Also, if yours is sittting on a smooth surface, you might want to use something to extend the legs so the base of the router has about 3 inches of open air under it. Helpds keep it cooler and that seems to be a good thing.

I was previously using v1.06 firmware, which is the unreleased beta firmware for this router. I downgraded back to 1.05, and the problems still occurred. I think the 1.06 firmware might have caused some type of corruption.

I press the reset button on the router, yet all of my settings still remain. I don't guess there is a way to reset the router's factory settings?

Yes, it's possible to reset the router to factory defaults. Hold the reset button on the unit for 30 seconds or more. If your router is configured for your ISP you may loose your connection until you set the unit up again.

I know what your saying, Same problem I have the BEFSR41 V.3.1.05 I didn't have to upgrade when I bought it - I get the intermittent disco's every time my lease changes from my ISP, the old style of router of the BEFSR41 styles never renewed the Modems IP address at least it didn't on mine for 3 years. I was thinking it could have been Zone Alarm because it has that option to lock out upon being idle for certian amounts of time then it engages the internet lock which shuts down the internet. When it comes back online the internet connection is severed even after you brint it out of the locked state. Then I have to reboot to open up the ports again.

I don't know if that is a key factor or if its a default that it is automatically on when you upgrade ZA. Also, the router itself is cheap way to go for a small budget of consumers which makes it junk, they are put together in like 2 minutes flat and all the parts inside them are pretty much junk. My last router was a good one it lasted about 3 years before it died unexpectedly.

I was thinking about getting a D-Link DI604 Router. What do you guys think? Should I get it? I most definitely will *never* buy a Linksys router again. In fact, I may stick with D-Link for all my networking hardware needs.

I know this post may be years too late but I've also had this frustrating problem and have finally fixed it with this firmware update..

Is the problem only with Linksys? If I bought another like a D_Link, will I not have a problem?

All makes. Just make sure they have good air circulation to keep them cool is the best you can do.
