I have been trying to setup a small network in my home with 1 pc with win xp sp1 and the other with win 98 se

The problem I am having is when i try to access network neighborhood on the 98 machine it just sits there and searches and never finds anything? Before I started accessing the 98 machine i was at least able to see an icon ENTIRE NETWORK with the xp machines name there also but since i have added a few folders to be shared i get nothing??? The other problem that i have if i put a password on my shared files from the 98 machine and try to access them from the xp machine i put in the password hit enter and it dissappears for a second then reappears as if i never pushed enter and does not allow access but there is no message just no action?I have internet access on both machines through a linksys that works fine..just can not access the xp machine from the 98 machine??

any help would be greatly appreciated....thanx

Well, yes. The problem sounds like more of a file sharing problem. Without more details and knowing the ping and the ping result, I suspect a improperly configured firewall.

If any of the computers have the Windows Firewall enabled, make sure it is properly configured for file and printer sharing. With Windows Firewall enabled, go to the Exception tab, and click to check the File and Printer Sharing checkbox. If you've installed a third party firewall program (Norton, McAfee, PC-cillin, eTrust, ZoneAlarm, etc), make sure that it's configured to allow access on the local area network.

well the ping results i don't know how specific you need the 98 machine could ping itself but not the xp machine (timed out) the xp machine could ping both itself and the 98 machine. Is there a firewall in xp sp1 ? I do not have any other software except sygate but i should have gotten a warning letting me know that access was attempted which i did not... could it be the router?

Why are you not running SP2 yet? It's more secure and I suggest you obtain the latest service pack as soon as possible.

No, it shouldn't be in the router. Yes, there is a firewall in Windows XP SP1. It is disabled by default. If the Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) is enabled, you need to properly open ports for file and printer sharing or disable the ICF.

If you are using Sygate, you must also make sure it is properly configured. I haven't used Sygate so I cannot give you detailed instructions. You might have an option to enter the ip address to the Trusted Zone.

I have heard to many bad things about sp2 if has not been installed from the factory!
So far I feel pretty secure with what I have got Nothing Bad yet (knock on wood)lol
I have checked sygate and there were some settings in there for allowing file and print sharing but even with them active now i still have no return on the ping..I do thank you for stickin with me on this so far..your help really is appreciated!!!

Well, it's your choice.

I would like you to install SP2 on your computer and give it a try. I have installed it on many systems and haven't had a single problem with it. If you would like to give SP2 a shot, take a look at the following link.

What to Know Before You Download and Install Windows XP Service Pack 2
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

Does file and printer sharing work now? Sygate is probably blocking the pings. I don't know what you have to configure. I don't have it installed on any of my systems so I cannot tell you what you have to do.
