access computer on net w/wireless

I have just received my modem/wireless router from Verizon. My main system is connected using ethernet cable and my laptop using wireless. Should I be able to communicate between the two with this configuration?

It works OK when I have them both connected to the router via ethernet cables.

Yes you should be able to just like if they were wired. It sounds like a setting is wrong on the laptop under network for your wireless.
