Cannot Capture Analog Video

Dell Dimension 8250. Added and ATI AIW 8500DV. Using Sonic MYDVD or Roxio 6 Moviemaker to try and capture from VHS tapes. What happens when I capture from Roxio is it lets me save the file as an .avi file. But as soon as it saves you can only see the very top horizontal line of video and the rest of the capture is green.

If I use Sonic, it captures and saves as an .mpg but on playback it plays for maybe 5 seconds and then just stops and jitters back and forth like it is stuck.

I have tried everything including updating vid drivers, reinstalling software, all windows updates including sp2 (Windows XP Pro), Media Player 10, Latest DirectX. Plenty of space on the hard drive. Not sure where to go from here.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

sounds like a codec issue to me. Have you tried installing the klite codec pak? MS also has an addon pack that's got some commonly needed codecs too.

But in this case I think it's the klite that you need. It allows you to choose what you want and don't want to install during the installation procedure... Going with the default is what I'd recommend.

Gotta admit I am clueless about codecs and how to use what when :P

I will give her a try and see what happens.

Thanks for your input and will update this as soon as I get to my brother in laws to see if it helps.

When you say go with the default, do you mean I should download the basic, standard or full K-lite codec pack?

Go with the standard but by default I meant that during installation there are already checks beside the items to install or not install so just leave them as they are.

104456: These are VHS tapes are from old super 8 family movies converted to VHS a few years back but not by me. Had a company do it. I assume they did not use Macrovision copy protection.

I know about stripping Macrovision from a tape before you can rip ip it to your pc but I assumed anything homemade would not even bring up this issue but I do appreciate your input. Any way to tell if the folks who converted the old movies used some sort of copy protection?

Other than it saying so on the packaging or in the titles I'm not aware of any way but I doubt these are protected since as you say they're old home movies and wouldn't have been copyrighted material to begin with.

Issue:
When using the ATI All-in-Wonder 128 to capture from a pre-recorded videotape, the
capture contains intervals of green frames.

Cause:
The ATI video drivers may need to be updated due to capture incompatibilities when
running under Windows 95 (OSR2), 98, 98SE, Me, and 2000. Pre-recorded videotapes often contain copy protection that ruins or prevents copying of any kind.

ATI drivers detect and respect copy protection. Some problems may also occur because the video card does not properly support Overlay.

Resolution:

Obtain and install the latest ATI drivers from:

If the videotape is not copy protected Preview and/or Overlay may need to be disabled for proper video capture. If green intervals persist in your captures your All-in-Wonder 128 software driver may be incorrectly installed. Try re-installing the latest version of the driver obtained from the hardware manufacturer's web site

Uninistalled both software and ATI drivers with no success. I was thinking more along the codec area as fink is. My only reason was that I know what they are and do but have no clue how to update them or know what codec you need when, etc. You get the idea. Thanks for the faq from ATI but tried that already.

If you want you can download gspot (it's free) and it will process the avi clip and tell you what codec it needs... you can get it here..

In my opinion,use only the MultiMediaCenter software from ATI to capture. I have the same 8500DV card and use MMC version 8.7.
It will let you capture in mpg 1 or 2 fairly easy. The presets that come from ATI are definitely 'not' the best,but you can create your own. A very thorough read at this page can be a good primer: http://www.digitalfaq.com/

As others have said regarding playback. I suggest the K-Lite standard pack along with the WMPlayer9 codec package from M$.

Keep in mind also,VHS tapes deteriorate over time,so your final video project can't be much better than it's source.

Another of my(and many others)opinion,is that Roxio is lame. Also the Sonic MyDVD. Give Nero6 Ultra a shot. The newer versions of Nero Vision Express and Nero Recode are very good for most home video needs...

Well I installed both codec packs. No change in problem. I then installed the latest ATI Catalyst drivers for the AIW 8500DV. Now when I try to capture from either Sonic MYDVD or Roxio Videowave, I get the same result. No more green screen, just on playback it plays for maybe 2 seconds and then just stops and jitters back and forth like it is stuck. Saved the file as an .avi and .mpg but makes no difference. Plays back the same way in the program that created as well as in Windows Media Player 10. I don't know what else to try.

I have the same card in my pc and have no problems whatsoever capturing analog video using Sonic MYDVD.

Any other ideas are appreciated.
