I have been wondering for a while what the age of most of the people here at Virtual Dr is..., but since there has not been an off-topic forum till recent, I have not been able to find out..

hearing talkings of children, grandchildren, and of computers that went obsolete before I knew what a computer was makes me feel really young..., (and makes everone else seem really old...)

I am 16 years old...., How old are you?

Hi Byan, so you're 16 years old. Heck, most of my grand children are older than you are. :) (boy does that statement make me feel old) Actually, I'm a very young 67. My advice to you Byan is; enjoy your youth and follow your dreams. (but stay out of trouble) HEHE

I suggest a poll is made to record the range of ages. It's also anonymous which suits the ladies.

My mom always tried to keep her real age a secret. She was pretty succesfull too. Few people knew how old she really was.

She even asked us, my brother and I, to not put her date of birth on her gravestone.

We didn't :)

...by doing a poll you can *see* the results. Some folk can draw conclusions by looking at figures. So far it is showing a very healthy spread of ages, which goes to show what a wonderful Family community we have here :p :p :p

Although, it's a shame that only 10% of you viewers are voting in the poll. What are you afraid it will do to you....

If I make it until Nov 30th I will be 69.
I feel lucky to have made it this far.
Hope you make it that far and farther.

25 years and 89 months old, give or take a few days... :D

Old enough to remember 8" floppies, suit-case sized hard drives and hours of amusement playing Donkey on the original IBM PC. Too young to have known punch cards, teletype terminals or vacuum tubes. ;)

Age isn't a physical measure, it's a state of mind. At least that's what I've kept telling myself during my 13 year battle to stave off adulthood... I guess denial really ain't just a river in Egypt !

thank you for all of the replies..

thanx for all the advise, ect. as well

it's kinda wierd how fast I am learning all this technoligy (mostly computer sceince) so fast...

I have never personally met anyone that knows more about computers then I do..., of course I know those people are there (some of you guys are proof)

I guess this is an example of how great the internet really is...
The only computer book I own is DOS 6 for dummies, and I have never actually read it. (It came my first computer, my 486DX)
everything I know is either from trial and error or from the internet

now, if I could only get broadband then I could really start having fun....

I wish my parents were more like you guys...
my mother is ok..., she can at least surf the internet
my father is horrible though..., you refuses to do it himself, so whenever he needs something done, he comes to me and makes me do it...., he thinks that it would be a waiste of time for him to learn to do it himself...
my grandfather on my mothers side just got into the stuff..., he bought a nice ibook..
my grandfather on my fathers side is a farmer..., and he seems that all computers are evil or something...

anyways, I have to earn my own money for every computer I use because of this...; which means that I only get a new one about ever 4-6 years...

Don't sweat it, when I was young my father thought computers were just a toy or a tool for work, and that I'd never "make a decent living" working with them. I won't even tell you what his first opinions of the internet were... Just keep truckin'...

If you really want to get a kick, start playing with Linux on your older systems, the internet is a great resource for learning it. If nothing else, learning Linux gives you better insight into how things work than Windows does, at least IMHO. At best, by the time you hit the workforce, companies may be scrambling for fresh talent with fluent Linux experience.

As for broadband, well, when I was your age, I know I wouldn't have been using it for learning. At least, not for learning the things we discuss on this board... ;) Stick to dial-up for now, it's in your best interests...!

Cheers,
KV

53.

Everyone ages, only some people grow old. The ones who grow old let the child part of their personality disappear. It is the child's curiousity about the world and continued drive to learn that keeps you young. The people at this forum who visit and tend to linger for a while share a common thirst to learn and thereby remain young.....

I'm not afraid to say it but it makes me cringe.

55. What is 55 supposed to feel like/be like? I can't figure it out really.

People used to say I look 10 years younger. I suppose I still do. Nobody says it anymore, though! And I hope that's not a bad sign.

I left my newspaper job for five years, and when I came back, it was weird: more than a few people looked really really older (some my contemporaries). I got really scared! Did I look older too? Others hadn't changed one iota!! I don't know how this happened.

Doesn't seem possible. But I feel like I'm still 10 most of the time. Seems like yesterday.

When I was born, they had a computer in two rooms at the University of Pa., with vacuum tubes and switches.

By the time I got to college, there were punch cards, time-sharing and Basic lessons at the university computing center.

In the '70s, some newspapers switched from hot type (Linotypes) to cold type. That was moving up techwise. Then they had scanners (which hardly worked -- I'm still amazed every time I check out at the grocery how well they do now). A little later, they got "CRTs" and "VDTs" to write on. That made it a lot easier to write and edit. Every newspaper I've been on since then had them, and now I'm on a Win2000 Pro network with a dedicated publishing system called Hermes (anyone hear of it? Allegedly they use it in Europe a lot). We don't have heavy lead plates anymore to take "stereotypes" of pages to the presses; the pages are sent directly from our computers by satellite to our printing plant, which is now in the suburbs. Phew! Never did I imagine.

When I started messing with PCs, they were terribly expensive and didn't have much. Some years later, they got a lot cheaper, a lot more friendly and a lot more graphical. I've used a lot of command-based programs, but it certainly is more fun to see pictures and colors. Not to speak of music. And 3D. And so on.

Now I don't know how I lived without our computers.

Cheers
Wendy

P.S. A couple of things I don't miss about my childhood:

1. Constantly being sick (measles, mumps, etc.). Nobody really gets these maladies anymore. There are vaccinations for everything!! My son even got some vaccine series for a sexually transmitted disease when he was an infant!! (just in case -- it was kind of on the rampage at the time and I guess they figured it was better to protect against it then than get it later) I even managed to just barely get him in for the chicken pox shot, just in time for him not to get it!! (The thing every parent dreads: two weeks off work with a miserable, itchy kid)

2. The Cold War. (Though the world seems a lot scarier now since 9/11)

3. Red scares.

4. Fear of nukes.

5. Vietnam

P.S.S.: Who in this forum is under 13!!!!! Speak right up now.

I really love how people of any age can be really smart about computers. Like Byan here. God bless you, kid.

I love how a young pup like Irfan Skiljian can invent a graphics viewer that now is a staple for practically everyone!!

I love how Mike Lin has a program that sits in the Control Panels of people all over the world!! Is this a great country -- er, world -- or what!!!!!
