programs cant connect to the internet

I go to akron university and i am connected through their wireless network on the campus. i am connected to the internet and my internet explorer works and can serve the net no problem but the programs on my computer will not connect like aim, norton virus scan, and my spyassissin will not connect either. im running windows xp professional. i used aim for a while than all of a sudden it just will not connect to the internet it says no connection.

Since Spyassisin masquerades as Adaware, it maybe why it didn't find all the spyware on your computer. I suggest you do three things then, we'll go from there. Go follow the instructions in this thread:

In addition to photolady's suggestions, contact your Univ. Admin.
Since you use their network (including firewall I presume) they might have some settings preventing certain apps to connect.
Or ask fellow students about their experience.
