Hi , i have a problem with a server (NT4 with SP6a).
After restart , apears the log on (Ctrl+Alt+Del) and then asking user name and password.
After that , nothing. I have an empty desktop without any icons. I cant choose anything.
But the server is working , because the services are working (i have internet in other machines with proxy from server , i have emails to other machines with exchange from server , i can see share files in server etc.)
I have tryed to boot with VGA option but nothing. Somethings wrong here.
Server is working inside but im blinde. I cant do any work on it without screen.
Please help
Thanks

What about pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete after you've logged in? If you get the regular window that comes up, you could run explorer and that might give you a desktop.

If you press Alt+Ctrl+Del after log in , you are always taking Task manager. After that you can only do a restart , a shut down or close some applications or services.
When i close task manager , i only see empty screen , without icons. So i cant work on it.

Have you got a keyboard with a Windows key connected? Try WindowsKey + R and see if you get the run dialog.
Try running Explorer.exe
or Eventvwr.exe
or progman.exe

OK, from Task manager (after pressing Ctrl-alt-del from blank desktop) can you use File>New Task to run Explorer.exe (as flachebaq stated but did not explain how to do)?

Haven't done a search of the MSKB on your specific problem yet but I wonder if your registry has been corrupted?
From task manager start a new task of regedit32.exe
Take a look in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Shell key and make sure it is set to Explorer.exe.
I suppose you could try changing the default shell to Progman.exe and then reboot and then change it back to explorer.exe.
Some info here in the MSKB (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;151176&Product=nts40) that may assist.
