Trying to burn Cd - repeated problem & variations.

specs:
Athelon800,win98, 32 kb primary mem, 256 kb secondary memory.

OPEN CRW1232 [CD-ROM drive]
IDE drives, over 900 megs left on drive C & all system worked fine untill mid december. Off & on for problems since then.Read the archives but no answers to my problem.
Software is: Adaptec easy cd creator v 4.02d s18

Current Error messages;

Error copying file:
Cannot copy file "file name*":
Cannot read from the source file or disk.

"file name*" means, herin, that the burning process stopped, at diferent disc burning attempts, on different files, not the same, possibly damaged,file..
I checked , the fies are not damaged.
------------------------------------------------------------
Error copying file:
cannot copy "file name*": access is denied
Make sure that disk is not full or write protected and file is not currently in use.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then, when i press on a folder on drive D:
I get " The folderD;\name does not exist. "

When i press eject, I get
" Drive is not under Direct CD file system't controll (0x0000003)"
DirectCD failed to finish all the file system operations.I did not close the disc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When i re-install the disk I can see and open the files already on the disk.

I tried downloading the latest driver update but problems persisted so I uninstalled all from the registry & re-installed the orig Adaptec. Problem comes & goes with variations.I read manual error codes but still lost.

Where should I start to sort this out?

Do I have a batch of variable quality cheap cd discs ?

Do I have a screwed up sector on my hard drive ?

Do I have a dying CD burner ?

Do I Have a screwed up windows 98 explorer, or some other problem?

Any leads appreciated. Thanks, in advance. W.

How many different brands of media have you tried?

Did you update your AV program with the latest files, and check for viruses?

Did you remove all spyware?

Did you try the latest version of Adaptec's software and also any patches or updates?

Is there another master burning program on the HD other than Adaptec?

Did you see if the burner works on a different system?

Thanks, in advance, for your advice & time spent on this second - long post.

My problem is with CD-R data disk burning not CD-RW which seems to works fine under the vDirect CD wizzard.
Have latest virus updates & have removed most spyware.Latest drivers & Direct CD on -same basic error.

Ran scandisc & CD is reported OK.
Will try with discs from a different supplier.Should eleminate possible errors from disk flaws..

Current error messages is:

Error copying file:"Cannot read from the source file or disk"

Doesn't this imply a file, windows or burner software bug, or HD problem, not the burner or disk because I can move the files one image at a time. When i try & move a dozen or so of small files, at 4x burning speed, I get the same error message via direct CD drag & drop or the main interface.

Later I re-loaded and viewed the saved image files saved to same the CD ( after re booting a non-closed cd).I can access the files that were transfered either one by one or as a group from one or more folders but when i continue adding files some will transfer as a group ok and the the same error message pops up for a different image. I have 4000 images to save and can't do them one by one.

The problem files are .jpg images downloade from the web. The error message occurrs on different files, not the same file each time.I have 256 k mem & 900 mg on the HD so It's not a not enough space problem.

Is it possible that some of these individual image files work when viewed from the HD or from the CD but screw up when coppied to a CD ??? I can copy them to other directories on the HD. Am I on the wrong track here?

I also have Nero software on my system.
I don't think that having 2 burning software packages on the same machine is a problem. Whould i not receive an error message from one or the other software.

Thanks for whatever leads offered. W

DirectCD is not really intended to write large amounts of data at one time (either a large number of files or a large total amount). You should be using either of your mastering programs (Nero or Easy Coaster Creator) to burn a standard data disc for this task. DirectCD is good at some things (some will yell "like trashing your computer!!"), but not so good at others. Burning more than a few dozen MB's at a time is best done by the mastering software.

I'm unclear from your description if you've actually tried the mastering software (not exactly sure what "the main interface" is), but if you haven't, try that first.

My CD Burner is working ok now thanks to tips from folks on:

http://forums.techguy.org/
http://www.helponthe.net/
http://www.virtualdr.com/
http://www.xtremepccentral.com/

Problem summary: Win 98 ,Adaptec EasY Cd Creator with latest updates. Thing went fine for two years years until:
Multiple & variable problems with Data Cd's made by Direct CD copy/paste or drag & drop. Didn't have alternate CD-R's to test but CD-RW's worked ok. Switched to Nero burning package:

http://www.nero.com/us/index.html (recommended by many) but had to reinstall Adapted when the Nero software saw, as full, CD-RW's which were not full, (but were started on Adaptec).

Suggest troubleshooting sequence:

Try Cd-R from another manufacturer to eleminate possible bad batch of disks.

Remove any other burner software on HD to eliminate possible CD controll conflicts. Use FIND to make certain that all files are really gone after you uninstall as the uninstall command doesn't always uninstall all.

Use a product like Reg Cleaner to see if there are still any ghosts commands still in the Registry, for Adaptec or Nero, etc. (in my case, there were)

If only Adaptec software is running but your problems continues with Direct DC., re remove all Adaptec software, re check for registry ghosts & re replace only the Main Adaptec East CD Creator software.

Direct CD, the drag & drop interface, has been flakey for some users when transfering large single fies or folders with a lot of files per folder. Download the latest upgrade or driver for you burner if you don't already have it. My system now seems ok. Burning at 8x rather than 12x.

Updates, drivers, & support drivers for Easy CD Burner are now at:

http://boards.support.roxio.com/roxio/
http://www.roxio.com/

If that sequence doesn't work and you suspect some sinster software interference, then Check for latest Win security updates at :

http://support.microsoft.com/

Find a Trojan Killing utility & see if you have mystery guests. Use a spy remover to take out possible Adware interference. Virus check your HD or at least the the files to be burned & then turn off your Virus checker before a burn test. Reboot before burning each test CD. Burn at even slower speeds, eg 4x. Check your total free HD memory , ram memory & use a software like MPower to flush memory caches before you start.

For more tips check out the archives at the sites above.

Again thanks to those who posted to my question. You saved another innocent baby CD burner from the Sledge. W!
