After years of using a really old computer I've entered the modern world and have a new laptop. It came with XP installed. I've connected to the net and find that when I open a page Internet Explorer (?) decides to click back to the page I was on previously or just refresh the page and lose everything I was writing (email). I also find that when I'm on the net the mouse is sluggish. I

have had a box pop up saying there was a System 32 generic host thing so I went as directed to the Microsoft page and downloaded all the patches and updates for XP/IE they recommended. The Generic Host box doesn't pop up anymore. When the net page clicks back nothing comes up.

I'm not sure what is meant to be done to fix this. I have tried disk clean up and it told me a whole bunch of system 32 files that didn't 'defrag'. I loaded on an anti-virus thing and it found a worm and deleted the file - in a system 32 I think. I've downloaded all kinds of cleaners - registry etc and deleted lots of things that for all i know shouldn't be deleted but none of these things have fixed the internet page clicking back problem.

Any help much appreciated as i obviously don't know what I am doing and should have stuck with Windows 95. If anyone thinks this is something I can't fix and that I should send this laptop back to where I purchased it let me know please.

Thanks and sorry this goes on and on and on.

Hi pcnoidea

Welcome to Vdr.

You're not going on and on, just explaining your problem.

Try using system restore, this can be found at Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>system restore. Just click on system restore. Click on restore my computer to an earlier time and follow the instructions on screen.

Run your anti-virus program again.

Go here and download Spybot Search&Destroy. (free)

http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?lang=en&page=download

Before running the program click on check for updates and if it finds any download them. Click on check for problems and follow the instructions on screen.

A tutorial can be found under help.

Check for updates on a weekly basis and run the program frequently.

Good luck.

The backspace key does the same thing as the "back" button in Internet Explorer. Since it sounds like you're writing email using a web mail site (as opposed to an email program like Outlook Express) when you hit the backspace key, it's possible that Internet Explorer is interpreting that as the "go back one page" command. It will definitely do that if the focus isn't on the message body field (that is, the cursor isn't blinking in the area where you type the text).
