Hello. ive tried many times to get my pc on my network. ITs running windows 98 SE. I have reinstalled windows many times. No matter wat i do i cant see any other computers on my network through network neighborhood. I got my internet connect and everything but i cant share files over the network with the rest of my family. Ive tried that little floppy about 50 times and it doesnt work. I need to access my pc downstairs so i can burn music for tonight.

Are you connecting directly to it, if so, are you using a Cross Over Cable?

Hi Jdawg.
Right click on Network Neighborhood and then Properties to see which network components are installed.
I have Windows 98SE installed on two networked computers and have the following components installed:
Client for Microsoft Networks
10/100 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter
NetBEUI
TCP/IP
File and print sharing for Microsoft Networks
Your adapter may be different may be different if you are using a dialup internet connection. I am on a cable internet connection.
Hope this helps.........Tom

Yep, need to know the answer to Train's question...direct connection through a cable to one of the networked PCs or through a hub or through a router or any combination thereof?
In Network Neighborhood>Properties>Identification tab, your computer must be given a name that is not the same as any other computer on the network you're trying to hook into. In the Workgroup field, it must have the same, EXACT name as all the other computers on the network.
Once you've made sure that information is correct (and rebooted if you had to make any changes), then right click on Network Neighborhood again and this time go to Map Network Drives.
Selecting any drive letter available that you want to start with (you can start with Z and work your way up, start with the first available and work your way down, start in the middle of the alphabet and work in either direction, makes no difference) in the top field, in the bottom field, type in the path to the drive you want to access using the following syntax, complete with backslashes as shown, no spaces:
\\Unique Name of Computer You Want To Access\Exact Name of Drive (Or Exact Path To Folder You Want To Access)
For example, to access the C drive on the downstairs computer, which I'll pretend is named "Downstairs," you would type in:
\\Downstairs\C
When you click on OK, if everything is set up right (right cables, the C drive on "Downstairs" is marked as shared and that computer is running) the contents of "Downstairs" C drive should display almost immediately.

There is 2 computers on the network that have different names and can see each other.. one group is mshome and one is da legacy. I have files shared on my drive but im still not on the network. My network name is different that the other 2 and the workgroup is different also. The thing is that the computers can see me but cant share any files and i cant see them at all. Do i need more than one logon name for it to work? (i have only one logon name for windows and if u press cancel the pc gets rebooted)

As Miz said your two computers MUST have the same workgroup name.
No you don't need two logon names. Unless you have a password for logon, just click "OK" and you should get back to the same desktop.........Tom

Then it is not sharing then. Need to get that straightened out.
Redo the share bit and watch the permissions and such.
Besides if he can access it he can upload the files you want to your computer. Copy and paste. I use explorer when doing that.

Dear Jdawg,
Notwithstanding the above advice about the unique name for your computer, your computer will not be visible in 'Networrk Neighborhood' unless you perform
Network Neighborhood > Properties > File and Print Sharing > (Check both the options - too long to wrte) > OK > (Make sure that 'Primary Network Logon: is set to 'Client to Microsoft Networks') > OK
It will prompt you to restrat your computer. Do so and now your computer will be visible in 'Network Neighborhood.' If not, the problem should lie with your TCP/IP address - most probably the subnet mask.
Please keep us informed.
Regards.
