I have a new 52x/24x/52x CD burner and RW CDs rated at 12x. I'm running XP HOME.
I have the CD burning software "CD Burner XP-PRO" which can burn these CD-RWs at 16x.
I just downloaded NERO 6 demo version. The software runs fine. It burns my CD-R discs at 48x but burns the CD-RW discs at only 8x.
Is there a "speed limit" on the demo version but not on the full product? I had planned on purchasing the full product but am reluctant to do so if 8x is the fastest it can burn CD-RWs.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Terry
PS> I'm considering NERO because of the variable gap function in WAV burning which CD Burner XP-PRO does not have.

I just burned an audio cdrw with the full version of Nero 6 at 12x with no problem. I wonder if Nero is only recognizing your cdrw as 8x? I'm using Memorex 12x cdrws.

I'm using Memorex 12x cdrws.
... and so am I - Memorex High Speed CD-RWs. They're described as "up to 12x".
As I said, my free burning software CD Burner XP-PRO will even burn these same CDRWs at 16x while the Nero 6 demo only sees them at 8x.
Can I assume that this a limitations in the demo?
Is anyone else running the demo and experiencing this?

With most newer burners, it's the 'burner' that decides what speed to burn at. Buffer protection in the firmware.
Excerpted from LiteOn tech page:
Users always want to successfully burn a disc with a higher speed in CD-RW drive. You may know, there are so many brands of CD-R / CD-RW media in the market with irregular quality & still being cost down in the price war.
LITE-ON IT try hard to collect various kinds of media to come out the dedicated optimized writing strategy parameters plus the outstanding running Optimum Power Calibration ( OPC ) function to provide you the best burning quality.
If your CD-R / CD-RW media quality is really poor enough or working environment is too hot to induce the Laser Power over margin, the CD-RW drive detected, the burning speed will be forced to decrease to get more reliable Laser working power to secure the life of CD-RW drive & burning quality.
The buffer under run error is also no longer happened to your drive anymore, SMART-BURN also can allow drive to be suspended during writing, than continue to burn from last point when enough data get in the buffer.
SMART-BURN features :
Buffer Under Run Error Free
Running Optimum Power Calibration
Automatic Writing Strategy & Burning Parameters
Automatically decrease burning speed when Laser power over margin due to poor media quality or high temperature

Sorry, but I beg to differ with you, Ridgrunr.
My "CD Burner XP-PRO" software burns at 16x but the "Nero 6 Demo" burns only at 8x. They're burning to the same burner. This means that it's NOT the hardware that determines the burn speed but the software. Otherwise wouldn't they both burn at the same speed?
In fact, a free audio-only burning software I have, "MP3 CD Doctor" will burn to this same burner at 24x!
Again, my question is: Is anyone aware of a burn speed limitation in the demo version of Nero 6.
Thanks,
Terry

Did you check the write speed drop-down box to see what recording speeds are available? You can change the speed you want to burn at there, although Nero usually selects the highest speed if your burner is equiped with buffer underrun protection. You might want to check the "Properties" of your burner in the "Choose Recorder" section to see if Nero is recognizing your burner's capabilities correctly. It seems unlikely that there would be any speed limitations to the demo if it lets you burn ordinary cdr at high speed.
Everything I read at the Nero site says that their demo is fully functional for 30 days, and there's no mention of speed limitations. I've used demos from other companies that limit burning to 1x or 2x, which made trying to evaluate the demo a waste of time. Chech that drop-down arrow in the Write Speed section (image attached) ans see if a higher speed is available.

Well, as Alice said, things are getting curiouser and curiouser ...
I uninstalled the Nero 6 Demo and installed the Nero (5.5 actually) that came with the 52x/24x/52x burner. And this version burns CD-RWs at 20x!
Since I was looking for burning software that would take advantage of the my new higher speed burner AND make it possible to adjust the gap between WAV tracks ... it makes sense NOT to fork out the big bucks for Nero 6 but just stick with the included 5.5 software.
Thanks for all your help.

Most of the new stuff in Nero 6 is for DVD burning anyway, so you really aren't missing anything unless you have a DVD burner. Nero has an update for version 5.5 (works on the bundled version too). Their updates usually include a few bug fixes, but it's up to you to decide. I've never had a problem with their updates though.

Thanks, Gerdog. Nero's server is "busy" so I'll download the patch later.
I don't have a DVD burner and don't forsee one in the future. So, I'll just stick with 5.5.
Thanks again,
Terry

Not to 'differ' with you zeszut, but if you have a decent burner with good buffering firmware. You can set whatever burning software to whatever speed it offers. The CD-RW will check the media used, and if it detects imperfections in the media, "it" will select the "safe" burn speed for it...:)

I am using the same new burner (listed at 24x RW burning) and the same new disks (Memorex High Speed listed at 16x-24x RW burning that I just bought this weekend) with each of these burns. Yet, the burning sofware I have seem to burn at different maximum speeds:
MP3 CD DOCTOR and CD BURNER XP-PRO both burn CDRWs at 24x.
NERO 5.5 burns CDRWs at 20x.
NERO 6 DEMO burns CDRWs at only 8x.
All four burn CD-Rs at 48-52x.
Granted, Ridgerunr, you may be telling me the way things "should" operate (and I agree wholeheartedly with all that you say) but I reported what was actually happening.
This discrepency was the original reason for this post.
As I wondered and, as Gerdog mentioned, some demos do have burn speed limitation. I was wondering if the NERO 6 DEMO had such a limitation.
Unfortunately, that question was never answered though the problem was solved (and money saved) by going to NERO 5.5.
Thanks,
Terry
