A friend of mine has a Compaq Armada 6500 laptop which has a removeable CD ROM drive which goes into a multibay where it can be switched for a floppy drive.

He removed the CD-ROM so he could use the floppy, but the laptop kept asking to put a floppy in the drive ,when there was already one in it.
He then put the CD Drive back in, but the drive no longer shows up in My computer.....it has the floppy drive icon ,but nothing for CDROM.

No cd drive shows up in device manager either.
I had a look in the bios an there is no mention of cd drives.
Does anybody know how the cd drive can be detected?
Thanks.

We have some laptops at work where you cannot switch the drives on-the-fly. You must turn the system off, change out the drives, then reboot (a real pain). This might be the case here. If not (if it was able to switch before while running), then it's possible your friend had a running program at the time and the system got screwed up when exchanging drives. Try shutting the system completely off, insert the floppy drive and reboot. Make sure there are no programs running (Explorer NOT open), then try changing out to the CD-ROM drive. Post back with results.
