If you are looking for an easy way to connect two machines, you could try using a crossover cable. It is a easy way to connect only two machines without special hardware or software, although there are many methods to accomplish a network.

See Peer-to-Peer Local Networking Using CrossOver Cables (http://www.razertech.com/edge/hardware/crossover/crossover.htm).
