Have new Sony Cyber-shot U digital camera. Followed directions in attempt to set up connection between camera and PC (Gateway EV 700 w/ Windows 98) for download of pictures.......unsuccessfully. Then, just hooked up camera directly to PC via USB cable, again no luck. Need some help!!

Sony digital cameras are a pain in a--. I have a dsc707 on Xp and had to go by a card reader for the smart stick. Part# msac-us1, at the time it was $69. Also check Sonys site for drivers.

I agree a card reader may be the easiest fix but you can get readers for less. They start around $20 at any computer store.

I am still using a Sony DSC-S70 and have found that I am able to hook up a USB 2.0 cable directly to my computer. The computer recognizes it as an additional drive and allows me to perform with any operation I desire when I call that drive. I have used a card reader and it works also.

The key is to FIRST install the drivers on the CD, THEN connect your camera to the computer. Do it the other way around and you have big problems, because Windows will pick any diver it can find that is close to what it thinks your camera needs and install that.

I have a DSC-S50, Windows ME, installed the drivers from the CD, connected the USB cable between the camera and computer, and it pops up as another drive in My Computer. Easy as that, no card reader required.

I have a Sony DSC 707. I would think yours should be similar. With the 707 and not using any memory reader: 1. The power cord must be plugged in and connected to the camera. 2. Camera is powered off 3. connect the USB cable to camera and to the system. 4. click "start " and go to "my computer" now as you turn the camera on you should see drive "F"(this is the drive letter for the Sony camera) appear on the MY COMPUTER screen. If you see this your camera is waiting and ready to send your pictures. If this doesn't work, read the instructions again carefully. I am assuming you did install the software from Sony.
Double click on "f"...
Really like this hookup because after you download the pictures, just turn the camera off and lit the battery charge for your next photo shoot.
I am running on an AMD2100 with XP pro and have no problems with the Sony. ;) Good LUCK
