Hi all,
Im at my wits end trying to install my new printer,Fax,scanner, copier. Its a HP office jet v40.
I installed it and first it said I do not meet the system requirements. I read the box and I do meet all the requirements. I went back and tried to install it again and it went though. I tried to print something and it kept telling me i was disconnected. I unistalled it again and reinstalled it and all the drivers and once again it says it is disconnected. I checked all the lines to see if they were in the proper places and I beleive they are. Any help would be appreciated as usually. I am going to bed now before I throw the printer out the door. LOL....
Love to all,
Kathy:o

It might help if we knew what operating system (Windows version) you are using, and what type of printer interface (parallel, USB, etc.) that you are using, since procedures vary greatly with different interfaces and OS'es.

I am running windows 98 second edition.
The printer is plugged in using a USB Port.
How can I tell if my USB port is functioning properly?
I am wondering if thats the case because when I turn on the pinter, it keeps telling me"Hp is disconected"
HELP!!!!
Thanks,
Kathy:(

You can check Device Manager for USB devices. There should be at least 2, a hub and the interface listed. Let us know what is listed on your PC.

My USb section it has two things that say:
1. USB Root hub
2. VIA TECH 3038 PCI to USB universal host controller
IM still lost because it looks like I have everything connected OK.

It looks like your USB drivers are OK. HP printer drivers (especially USB ones) are notorious for being a pain to install. There are two things you could try: Make sure you re-check HP's procedure for installing the printer hardware and software. If it isn't followed exactly, it probably won't work. FInally, you could also try installing it on a different PC to see if you can get it to work there. It is possible that a hardware problem with the printer is to blame, although that is not likely.
Finally, i noticed that you have a Via chipset for the USB ports. You might want to post a more detailed description of your PC here. You may need a BIOS update, or the latest Via 4 in 1 driver update to get your USB working properly. You can download a program that will give you system information from http://www.belarc.com and post the results of that here.

There are two dirty tricks that USB is known to do despite the claims of being totally Plug and Play. First off, make sure that you installed the software exactly how the instructions tell you. At lot of times if you plug in the device and then install the software, you'll have problems. Most of the time, you have to install software and then hook up the device.
Second, a lot of USB devices expect to be inserted into the same USB port. My Logitech mouse is a good example. If you install the drivers and then hook it up, it won't work on any other USB port except the port where it was installed.
Third, is their an option for detecting the printer? I have a scanner that my company sells that has an option to detect the scanner if you turn on the computer and the scanner is turned off or not attached.

Thank you!
I will look into those things and let you know how it goes.
Its weird though. I did get the printer and the fax working today but it doesnt seem to find the scanner now ughhhhhhh....
Take care!

By the way, for all you HP users out there, if you don't know HP is in bed with BackWeb, which is spyware. I knew enough to watch for it on a reinstall of the OS, but didn't think about it when I got my HP scanner last month. Ran SpyBot last night, and sure enough, there were dozens of references to BackWeb in the registry.
