Missing Icons: anyone help me!

Here's the problem:
I installed RealONE Player (a very useful, but dangerous thing!) and all my media extensions where authomatically associated to it. I tried with the advanced config to force it to relase the files (I'm still in love with Microsoft's Media Player 7.01) but it didn't work. So I uninstalled the Realplayer and removed all the registry and shell entries it left behind (or at least I hope so) with jv16 Power tools' app.
All my media files are now back to Media Player, but their icons do not appear anymore. When I double-click on them, they open normally, but I am not able to force their icons back.
I noticed a few of them actually where restored, but the most common ones are still missing (.MP3,.M3U,.MPGA,.MPG,.MPEG,.MPV,.MPS,.M2V,.M1V,.MPE,.MP2,
.MPA,.WAV,.AU,.AIFF,.AIF,.AVI,.MID,.MIDI,.RMI,.WMA,.CDA).
I tried a lot of times deassociating, reassociating and changing icons in the Folder Options, but it doesn't work!
How may I restore the missing icons back?

One way is to do it manually. Open My Computer, View, Folder Options, click File Types tab. Click on the type you want to change, and then there should be a place for you to change the icon associated with it.

Another option would be to try deleting the file ShellIconCache (usually in the Windows directory). Windows will re-build this file when you reboot.

Have you checked in the programs tools/options/preferences to see if there is an option(s) to remove checks from any file associations that have been entered by default?
This can happen if you don't choose(or it won't "let" you choose) a custom install...

Done that as well,:( ....I think there's still a shell entry that causes conflict, but I don't dare to cancel entries I do not recognize....:rolleyes:

How about re-installing Media Player ?.

A couple of things I do when I install Real1:

It does give you the ability to not associate it with file types although you have to look for it during the install. I uncheck ALL of them. I don't even let it have .ram or .rm files. It still opens them when you need.

After it's installed, uncheck TkBellEXE in msconfig, then find and delete rndal.exe and evntsvc.exe. This gets rid of behind the scenes activity.

Did that as well....and I have uninstalled Real1, removing all the files and the shell and registry entries (at least I hope)!!
....still I cannot see the icons back.
Maybe I should really reinstall Media Player (gosh!It's a huge download!):(

Just had a thought. TweakUI has an option under the "repair" tab to rebuild icons. Might be what you're looking for.l

Windows Explorer Tools/Folder Options/File Types :

for each file type e.g. MPG, EDIT the entry ("Advanced" button in W2K) and hit the "change Icon" button. If there's no associated file, navigate to "Windows\System\Quartz.dll" (Winnt\System32\Quartz.dll in W2K) and select the icon you want.

In ME and 9x the icon may well be that of Media Player, in which case navigate to "Program Files\Windows Media Player\Media\mplayer.exe" or whatever your version is.

Open Windows Media Player, pull down the tools menu, click on options, choose the file types tab, click select all, click apply and exit.

Actually, that's the first thing I did....but it didn't and it doesn't work!:mad: (But thanx the same)....
