I know Windows Update is all screwed up. But what I would like to ask is their a way to download the other "critical" downloads before the one on top that needs to be installed seperatley? The other downloads just have remove buttons.:o

HackMcDivot--Are you saying you cannot uncheck the box next to the critical download you do not wish to install? (And then proceed to download/install the others.) Don't think I ever saw that.
However, most downloads from MS are available elsewhere, for example the IE Critical Update page
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/default.asp
Or the Download Search page
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp?
And then there are download pages specific to each MS Operating System.

Some downloads I can download at will. But there are others that just have a "remove"button to them. I cannot download the top Critical download, the one that must be installed seperately.

If you go into "critical" updates they are by defualt all checked and ready to go.

Remove ALL but the one you want.

Steve, have you used or downloaded anything from Windows Update lately? If you did download anything from there you are one of a few who are able to use it successfully! I have been to the Microsoft suggestion box newsgroup and all you see there are posts that are titled,"what's with MS Update"! I hear it is mostly with XP but I have the problem. I run Me. I can download drivers, and pathches. Any critical updates are a no, no! I try to re-boot but can't get past splash screen.

I update many computers there all week long and have never had a problem.

You can also get the updates from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp

But, back to your original problem. What happen when you remove all but the one you want to get?

I installed the drivers and the net. frame soft ware. I rebooted and everything went well. When I try to install the critical updates by rebooting, I get stuck at the splash screen. I have to run Go Back to get the computer booted again. What version of Windows are you running? Go to the Microsoft newsgroup discussing update and you will see the problems people are having!

"I installed the drivers and the net. frame soft ware. I rebooted and everything went well."

You got this from M$ update correct? You did the upgrade and rebooted and all is well?

"When I try to install the critical updates by rebooting, I get stuck at the splash screen."

I'm getting confused at this point.

Listen Steve. I can download and install everything except for the Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1. Maybe it is because I have IE 6 installed already? I have been running it for about 8 months. Every machine has different downloads that are required. I have 2 drivers(3 com 10/100 Ethernet card & Logitech driver for my camera)http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp I sent you what the update site found that I need. The download on top must be downloaded seperatly and I can't get past the splash screen after installing(rebooting is part of install)

I installed everything except the critical update. I can't install the IE 6 service pack 1. Like I said I have had IE 6 installed for 8 months. So maybe I don't need it.

HackMcDivot--Click IE Help|About Internet Explorer. On the line "Update Versions" does it say SP1? If not, you do not have SP1 installed.
If you do not have SP1, have you tried downloading and installing it from the site both Steve and I have suggested
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.asp?

Think everyone needs to be cautious. I just posted the following in the internet security, virus forum here:

If you are using internet explorer version six with SP1 then you may believe that the Q328970 cumulative patch (security) downloaded and installed okay. It's my understanding that even though it may show as a successful installation per your installation history at the windows update site.........that may not be true. I won't say that this is written in stone but it appears that the patch is not installing correctly on a lot of systems. If you go to the menu bar in internet explorer and click on help, then about internet explorer then look at update versions then Q328970 should be listed after SP1. If not, then you may have problems that you are not aware of with the installation. Any insight or input would be very welcomed by everyone. bob

Might ck the microsoft forum:

No I can not install it from the site that you gave me either. I download it and install it and then when I am asked to reboot, I do so but I don't get past the WinMe splas screen. Stayed there for 4 minutes today! I have in About Internet Explorer, Q328970, but after that I have nothing. That is the last patch loaded. Crazy stuff!

According to my Installation history I tried to install this IE service pack 1 on Oct.4th 2002 and on Sept. 18th 2002. They both are marked as failed. So this seems to be a compatibility problem with my system!
