Your getting close to the right speed for 56k. Before I went to cable the most I ever got was 6kbs and usually 4-5 range. Remember its kbs and not kBs.

Just to clarify:
Your modem is 56 kilobits per second
In computers, everything is 1s and 0s.
A single 1 or 0 is a "bit"
8 bits is called a byte.
When you are downloading things from a web site, the browser repors the speed in kilobytes. Files sizes on your computer are shown in bytes.
"kilo-" means '1000'... although in the computer world is is often 1024.
So to convert from bits to bytes (or kilobits to kilobytes, or megabits to megabytes) you need to divide by 8.
56 kilobits per second divided by 8 bits per byte is 7 kilobytes per second.
7kilobytes/sec is the theoretical maximum speed of a "56K" modem. Due to FCC regulations and limitations of the phone cable (interference etc) the actual top speed is closer to 6kilobytes per second.... in ideal situations.
So you aren't that far off.
If kazaa is telling you that people are downloading from you at 24 kilobytes per second... it is simply measuring it wrong because that is impossible. :) Maybe kazaa shows it in "kilobits" (I forget)

'Nuther thing,,although a modem is "advertised" at 56K, it will never reach that limit cause the FCC's limit is 52K. Before i got cable,my modem would connect fairly well at 46 to 50kbs and i could dn/load at 5 to 6kbs usually. But,no matter how good your connection,if your having to go thru' 50 servers to get to the person your dn/loading from, and it's the time of day with high traffic,it's gonna' be slow...
