when i try to get a file from gutenberg to read a book it goes to temporary internet files and it wont even open , it tries to start up real jukebox or player , why wont it ask me to save it to desktop? etc

You might want to try one of their other FTP sites. I haven't had any problems downloading there. I usually browse through the selections starting here:

They have a FAQ section there too.

I found there that the ebooks are either .txt files or .zip files.

Either way I suggest right clicking on the ebooks and then select 'Save Target As' because this will prompt you for where you want to download to versus going directly to the TIF folder.

Of course you need Zip utility to open .zip files.
http://oldversion.com/ has PowerArchiver. Any version below version 7 is free. I have been using version 6 for some time. It is very much like WinZip but with no nags. I personally like it much more than WinZip.

The .txt files should open with WordPad as they are too big for NotePad.
